Come fishing for Redfin Perch with Ash
Cold, foggy mornings can only mean one thing—it’s prime time for targeting redfin perch!
From around April through till August, the humble Perch school up to do their dirty deed for the year.
If you're willing to put in the effort and trek a little further than most, you’ll often stumble across larger schools- sometimes 10 to 50 fish strong with around 80% being males hanging around a couple of lucky females.
Reddies will hit a range of different lures, but winter is definitely what I like to refer to as “Placcy Season”.
Soft plastics in the 2–4 inch range are the go-to—think the Z-Man Grub in classic motor oil, or baitfish-style profiles like the Hurricane Sprat 75 and the Daiwa Bait Junkie Flick Minnow.
They aren’t too fussy when it comes to colour choices in these types of plastics, but they tend to like the motor oil variations or the darker greens.
Pairing these plastics up with a TT jig head in the 1/0 hook size and depending on depth and distance your needing to cast a 1/12oz or the 1/16oz will be spot on.
The technique is simple: cast out, let it sink, then give it a sharp double twitch and allow it to sink again. Most hits come during that slow drop back to the bottom, when the lure is just hovering in the strike zone.
Pushing yourself through the thorns and thistles you most definitely be rewarded with some beautiful healthy Perch!
